BOOK SHELF

Gene Allen Smith.  The Slaves' Gamble:  Choosing sides in the War of 1812.  New York:  Palgrave Macmillan, 2012.

The War of 1812 is considered a military conflict without a decisive outcome or consequences, yet the way the young nation responded during this conflict sealed the fate of slaves for the next half century until the Civil War.  This drama sheds light on an extraordinary yet little known chapter in the dark sage of American history.
